Stephen Devries MD

WHAT FEEDS YOUR HEART?

New scientific advances have revealed the remarkable potency of simple strategies for optimizing our health. This talk will highlight surprising, yet highly practical nutritional and lifestyle interventions that can make an enormous difference in maintaining wellness. The critical importance of self-care for health professionals will be emphasized.

Joe Monahan

NAVIGATING CONFIDENTIALITY FOR THE HEALTHCARE ADVOCATE

HIPAA: What exactly is HIPAA and what are misunderstandings about patient confidentiality law in Illinois? How do new EHR regulations and liberties apply to protecting patient confidentiality? An overview of new Illinois laws regarding patient confidentiality will be presented by Mr. Monahan, who is not only an attorney and social worker, but also an active participant in lawmaking forums in Springfield that influence current changes in healthcare law.

Melanie Dreher PhD, RN

ADVOCACY BEGINS WITH US!

Advocacy for patients begins with each of us who serve them, in whatever capacity we find ourselves: as advocates, care providers, navigators and care managers. Dr Dreher will share her philosophy of nursing and her empowering message will be sure to inspire us to all work collaboratively for the patient’s best interests, once we find our voice, and passion; believing that each of us can truly make a difference in this quickly changing period in American healthcare.

Mary F Mulcahy, MD

PHYSICIAN ORDERS FOR LIFE-SUSTAINING TREATMENT (POLST)

POLSTs are more detailed than conventional living wills and advance directives– these forms give patients the freedom to indicate preferences regarding resuscitation, intubation, intravenous antibiotics and feeding tubes, among other things. POLST was first developed in Oregon in the 1990s, and now 14 states have officially endorsed programs; 28 states are considering the use of these forms.  Dr. Mulcahy will explain how POLST affects everyone involved in the end-of-life experience.
